What Type of NPK Granulator Is Better: Rotary Drum or Double Roller Extrusion?

In the construction of NPK compound fertilizer production lines, granulation equipment is the core component determining the quality of the finished product, production efficiency, and operating costs. Currently, the two mainstream types of NPK granulation equipment on the market are the rotary drum granulator and the double-roller press granulator. Many investors and industry professionals struggle to decide which of the two is better suited to their specific production needs. In reality, neither is inherently superior; the key differences lie in their processing principles, product characteristics, investment costs, and application scenarios. This article provides a detailed comparative analysis.

The rotary drum granulator employs a wet granulation process, requiring the addition of water or steam during production. Materials tumble, bind, and agglomerate within the rotating drum, gradually forming round, full-bodied granules. Its greatest advantage is the excellent appearance of the finished product: the granules are uniform, smooth-surfaced, strong, and free-flowing. They are easily coated to prevent caking, and the final product meets the standards for high-end commercial sales. Additionally, the equipment offers high capacity and stable operation, making it ideal for large-scale, continuous production.

However, the rotary drum granulator has distinct drawbacks. The wet process requires auxiliary equipment for drying, cooling, and screening, resulting in a large production line footprint and higher energy consumption. Initial equipment and site costs are higher, and the process demands strict control over raw material moisture content and operational parameters; thus, it is best suited for medium-to-large standardized fertilizer plants and high-volume NPK production lines.

The double-roller press granulator utilizes a dry extrusion process, requiring no water or steam; powdered raw materials are directly shaped through high-pressure extrusion between two rollers. The process's highlights include a simple workflow and the elimination of drying equipment, which significantly reduces energy consumption and long-term maintenance costs. The production line is compact, requires minimal floor space, and has a lower initial investment threshold. The equipment is highly adaptable to various powdered NPK raw materials, allows for immediate startup, and is simple to operate, enabling even novices to master it quickly.

Its disadvantages lie in the shape of the finished granules—often pillow-like or cylindrical—which are less round and aesthetically pleasing than drum-granulated products, placing them in the mid-range market segment. Furthermore, the equipment's single-unit capacity is lower than that of the rotary drum granulator, and the pressure rollers are wear parts that require regular inspection and replacement. It is ideally suited for small-to-medium-sized fertilizer plants, small workshops, and production projects facing budget or space constraints.

In summary, the rotary drum granulator is the preferred choice when prioritizing high-quality product appearance, high capacity, and large-scale production; conversely, the double-roller extrusion granulator is the best option when emphasizing low investment, low energy consumption, and ease of operation and maintenance, while having less stringent requirements for the fertilizer's visual appearance. Manufacturers can select the appropriate granulation equipment based on their production scale, budget, and target market positioning to establish a cost-effective NPK fertilizer production line.
